You Want Me to Do What?

..."Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." - John 21:6a

The disciples were fishing. It was after Jesus had been crucified. Peter had gone through his most agonizing moment in which he had denied Jesus three times. He had lost a friend. No doubt he probably wondered whether the last three years were a dream. What now? 

Peter had been prepared three years, but he was not going out to preach; he was going fishing. He had returned to his trade of days gone by. He had a level of experience with Jesus that no other human on earth can boast. This was the third encounter he was about to have with Jesus after His resurrection. Jesus looked to Peter and John in their boat and made a suggestion. 

"Friends, haven't you any fish?" 

"No," they answered. 

He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some" (Jn. 21:6a). 

Now, if you are as seasoned in your fishing as these guys were, wouldn't you be a bit irritated if a stranger suggested that you simply put your nets over the other side to catch some fish? Yet we find that they took this stranger's advice. Once they were obedient, the Lord revealed Himself. 

When they followed Jesus' advice, the catch was enormous - 153 fish in total. In most cases such a haul would have broken the net. Jesus invited them to have breakfast with Him - fish and bread; He had already started the fire. I can only imagine that this scene would resemble some buddies going out and camping together. 

There is so much that we are to learn in this passage about God's ways. As a workplace believer, we must understand that after we have spent years with Jesus, this does not always mean we must leave our professions in order to fully follow Jesus. Peter went back to his profession - fishing. It was here that Jesus asked him a simple question: Do you love Me and will you feed My sheep? He didn't say to Peter, "Fishing is a waste of time for you now, Peter." This recommissioning was in the area of his original calling - his work. We need not feel that we must go to the "mission field" to please Jesus. Our work is our mission field. We must, however, make a paradigm shift in our thinking about our place in the work world. We must have an overriding sense of mission and ministry that comes out of that work. This is what is meant when we say that we must all be circumcised before we can enter the Promised Land. When this happens, we can expect to see God fill the nets with His blessings. He wants to do this because He now owns the net, and He can trust us to manage it.

"We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us." 1 Corinthians 2:12

God desires for us to know what He has freely given to us. One of the responsibilities of the Holy Spirit is to reveal His plans and purposes to us. They may be hidden for a time, but if we seek Him with our whole heart, we can know what He has given to us. 

John the Baptist understood this principle. When asked if he was the Messiah, he replied, "A man can receive only what is given him from heaven" (Jn. 3:27). John understood his role in the Kingdom of God. He came to pave the way for the Messiah; he was not the Messiah himself. His ministry on earth was very brief, yet Jesus described his life in this way: " 'I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he' " (Mt. 11:11). 

Once we understand what God has given to us, we can walk freely in our calling. However, if we strive to walk in a role that He never gave us, it will result in frustration and failure. God wants to reveal His plan to us by His Spirit. This requires a willingness to seek and accept what He gives us. It may be different from what we thought. It may require adjustments to follow His path for our lives. As we learn from the life of John the Baptist, obedience requires death to our own wills. 

Ask God to reveal what He has freely given to you. Pray that you receive and embrace only those things He has reserved for you to receive and to accomplish in your life. Then you can be assured of a life full of meaning and purpose, and you can look forward to hearing those all-important words someday, "Well done, My good and faithful servant."

"Everyone will be salted with fire." Mark 9:49

Jesus used parables to communicate principles of the Kingdom of God. He said each believer's life should have the same impact on his or her world as salt has on food. Salt gives food flavor and brings out the best, while at the same time it serves as a preservative. 

What allows a Christian to become salty? Fire. God knows that each believer needs a degree of testing by fire in order for Christ's fragrance to be manifested. We cannot become salty without this deeper work of the Holy Spirit's fire in our lives. Fire purifies all that is not of Christ. It takes away all the impurities that prevent His nature from being revealed in us. 

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith-of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed (1 Peter 1:6-7). Are you a salty Christian? If not, pray a prayer that the immature are unwilling to pray. Pray that God makes you a salty Christian. It will result in praise and glory at the throne of God.

I am like a tree that is always green; all your fruit comes from me." Hosea 14:8, NLT We’ve all heard the saying that we live in an ‘instant’ world. Technology has impacted our lives tremendously and most of us can’t even imagine being without our cell phones, computers, laptops and televisions. The media also informs us about every upgrade and what’s new. Information can be accessed wherever we are. A whole new world with endless possibilities has become available to us. Apart from all the wonderful inventions around technology, there’s also an endless source of self-help books, different therapies for every condition or situation, remedies for all our ailments and an answer available for every problem The question that arises is whether we still remember to ask God for direction, before we choose the possible solution to the problem we may be facing in our lives. Recently I became aware of the way people dart from one therapy to another, or from one self-help book to the next one, or how easily they take advice from any possible source without even for one moment taking the time to hear the Lord’s heart for their situation. They try every new method without considering what or who is behind it. In Ephesians 5:10 we are warned: ‘Carefully determine what pleases the Lord’. The Lord waits for us to call on Him first; to trust Him for the road we should choose towards the solution we so desperately need. He has the answers available and He knows exactly who to bring into our lives or who we should call on for help. Our Lord is a God of order and we should learn to respect Him in this area. As His children, we need to learn to hear His heart for our situation. Many Christians become weary because they haven’t followed this path. They get to a stage where they just can’t understand why nothing works out and eventually to a point where they believe God doesn’t really care about them, or that even He can’t solve their problems. They have no hope or vision that their situation will ever change for the better. We need to give everything in our lives to the Lord first and ask Him for the right way, before we choose the answer we think is right. We can’t make our choices and then ask Him to make it work. The horse must be in front of the carriage, not the carriage in front of the horse! I believe a lot of confusion and misunderstanding would be avoided if we looked to the Lord first, if we learnt to allow Him to guide us, and if we sought His will in every area of our lives. Prayer: Dear Jesus, You are my Alpha and my Omega, my First and my Last, my Beginning and my End. Please increase my trust in You and help me to allow You to direct my paths. Please forgive me for all the times I reacted in a headstrong way and chose to follow my own ways. I now choose to put You first in every area of my life. Amen. 18 October, 2011 Today's Free Devotional from Ellel Ministries International  My Times are in Your Hands "My times are in your hands…" Psalm 31:15, NIV ‘My times are in your hands’ was a favourite scripture of Corrie Ten Boom who lived with her family in Haarlem in the Netherlands until the Second World War. The Ten Boom family gave sanctuary to Jews on the run from the Nazis, until the hiding place in their home was discovered and they were incarcerated in camps. Most of the family perished but Corrie survived. Her life after the war was one of making herself available to the Lord to do His work, in His time and in His way. Corrie lived a long, interesting and fruitful life as the Lord took her from country to country to tell people about Him and to act as an agent of reconciliation. Her times were indeed in His hands. Recently I’ve thought a lot about this scripture and wondered about my own understanding and use of time, and how it’s been influenced by the world in which I live. As I’ve looked around me I’ve observed that many people appear to have difficulty with time. Some have too much time and are bored. Others are run off their feet and hardly have a minute to sit down, let alone stop and think about what they’re doing and whether they should be doing it. We constantly hear comments like; “I don’t know what I do with my time. It just runs away”, “I wish I had more time”, “I never have the time to do the things that I’d like to do or that matter”, “Why does time go so fast?”, “Before I know it my life will be over.” There are many more comments we could add to this list. I once read that time is a problem for mankind because the Lord designed us for eternity. The question is, “Is my time submitted to God or is it something that I hold on to as mine to use and to manage in my own way?” It’s becoming increasingly clear to me that the more I choose to own my time and manage it my way, the more I actually abuse it. Conversely the more I offer my time to God and ask Him to direct the way I use it, the more I seem to be able to use it fruitfully without becoming exhausted from trying to keep too many balls in the air at the same time. My time needs to be in God’s hands not mine. Prayer: Father I acknowledge that I don’t fully understand how to use the time that You have given to me. Sometimes I do nothing and waste it and other times I use it wrongly and abuse it. The result in either instance is that, according to Your purposes, there’s not fruitful use of it. I’m sorry. I want to submit the time that You’ve given me to You and I ask You, Lord Jesus, to please show me day by day how to use it aright. Amen. If people could only see the benefit of giving their strength to God, they would; instead, they believe their reward comes in giving of themselves to something else. It’s why many people invest personal power in earthly pursuits and pleasure and why even those considered religious have creatively structured their own special relationship with God to include their own pet indulgences; and it explains why, for them, the power has gone out!

True spiritual power is the critical factor for achieving personal power. Yet for many of God’s people, power for prayer and supernatural power to address the challenges of life have gone out like a light disconnected from the power source. Their personal power is small – very small.  

If I give my strength—if I yield it to the Lord—I receive much more in the exchange. As I honor and worship Him with all that I am, I receive from Him all that I need: “Now unto Him that is able to keep me from falling, and to present me faultless before the presence of His glory with great joy, To the only wise God my Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever.”  Jude 1:24-25

Focus - 22 Oct 2011

22 October, 2011 Today's Free Devotional from Ellel Ministries International  Focus "I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people." Ephesians 1:18, NIV The universe is absolutely huge. Even in our local neighbourhood - the Milky Way - distances are awesome. For instance, the nearest that Mars ever gets to Earth is 56 million km. So when they want to send a rocket to Mars they have to calculate everything right down to the smallest fractions. If they send it in a direction only half a degree out, it will miss Mars altogether. And a miss is a miss whether they miss by 1,000 km or a million km. Life is a little bit like that: A few little changes here and there, a few detours along the way, can make the difference between hitting the mark and missing the mark. God has given each of us a specific destiny, a plan for our life (Jeremiah 29:11). But He has also given us a free will to choose to walk in His will and purpose, or in our own will and purpose. Samson's life was pre-destined by God. When the angel appeared to his parents he gave them a message from God - instructions on how to raise their son and what their son would become! What a marvelous lesson to show us how God cares for the details of our lives! But there was still an aspect of free will, despite all the instructions given! As we read on we see that some of the choices that Samson made were against the will and plans of God! When life is full of pressure and chaos, it’s easy to lose our focus on God and that may be what happened to Samson. There are consequences in our failure to focus. We can lose track of our destiny and God’s plan for our lives. It’s all too easy to steer off the road if you are driving without focus. What has God called you to do? Do you know His plans for your life? Are you heading in the right direction? Are you struggling to fulfil your own ambitions or are you focused on doing His will? Maybe God has instructed you to do something, to pursue your calling, to fulfil a certain task, or to move into a closer relationship with Him. You know what you should do, but are you doing it? Prayer: Father, thank You for the life You’ve given me and the future You have in store for my life. Please help me to focus on doing Your will. Let my spirit and my heart listen to You and follow Your instructions. I pray today for a clear focus without distractions. Amen. Out of the Box - 21 Oct 2011

21 October, 2011 Today's Free Devotional from Ellel Ministries International  Out of the Box "I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Psalm 139:14, NIV As I was tidying away my son’s toys I found myself becoming frustrated that they just didn’t fit nicely into his toy-box. Various shapes, sizes, colours, textures and materials mingled together to form the basis of his educational, yet irrationally and unevenly shaped collection of toys. Even the books didn’t seem to be normal book-shapes! As such, they just wouldn’t fit neatly together in a convenient and sensible box. As I tried to wedge in a particularly non-conformist toy, I found myself thinking of how we can be like these toys. We are all amazingly and uniquely created in the most imaginative way. We all have so many facets to ourselves. There are our personalities, likes, and dislikes, talents, even our physical bodies. Yet we’re conditioned by life to fit into stereo-typical boxes. It could be the box for the good Christian or the box for the perfect wife, husband or parent. It could be that we should all look a certain way, wearing similar clothes and fitting them perfectly. Or it could be enforced upon you by your job, your community or your family. It could even be a box you create for yourself in order to feel secure. Such pressures lead us to becoming frustrated as we strive to conform and gain man’s acceptance. Yet it’s impossible to conform because you just don’t fit the box. Ultimately you’ll fail in gaining man’s full acceptance. Many of us go through life working so hard to fit into the appropriate boxes that we lose sight of who we truly are. For us to gain God’s acceptance we simply have to be ourselves; the true self that God foreknew (Jeremiah 1:5) and created from His heart of love and unlimited imagination. God’s acceptance is unconditional and is everlasting. Man’s acceptance is fickle, fallible and conditional. As it is, Kyle’s toy-box is simply buried beneath a jumbled collection of bright colours and exciting opportunities for fun and learning. Maybe that’s how it should be for us. Rather than trying to conform to a box-like standard we should just enjoy being an exciting and colourful jumble of all that God made us to be! Prayer: Father God. Thank You for making me, me. I’m sorry I’ve tried to squeeze myself into boxes that constrain my true self and I ask You to help me find more of the real me and enjoy my life as You wanted me to. 14 October, 2011 Today's Free Devotional from Ellel Ministries International  Let’s make sure we finish the race "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1-2, NIV The Christian life is likened to a race. In a race it’s not how you begin but how you finish that counts. Our race is not a short sprint. It’s a long distance race that requires commitment, stamina and perseverance. To finish the race and gain the prize there are three things the runners must do. ‘Let us throw off everything that hinders’. Our race has eternal consequences. Two things that hinder us are heavy weights and sin. Weights restrict activity. They’re superfluous things which bog us down and handicap us. They could even be the good things we do which God hasn’t called us to do. Sin entangles us and clings closely. Before we know where we are, we can be tripped up and fall flat on our face. Yet we had every possibility of getting the victory. ‘Let us run with perseverance’. To persevere means to endure. It’s the same word used of Jesus when He endured the cross (1 Peter 2:21). Nothing turned Him back – He never lost sight of the goal. We run in the steps of Jesus. It will involve opposition and even suffering. The race isn’t run for applause or reward, but for Christ alone. Love for Him keeps us in the race. ‘Let us fix our eyes on Jesus’. In the arena the eyes of the athletes are fixed on the finishing tape, the prize, the glory and the acclaim. They’re so concentrated on the goal that their eyes never leave it. The race for the Christian demands the same dedication and commitment. Our eyes must be fixed on Jesus. He’s the prize and the reward. But our eyes must be fixed on Him for the whole of the race – from beginning to end, if we’re to finish the race well and win the prize. The athlete in the arena receives a prize in the form of a garland of flowers that won’t last long. The prize in the heavenly race is a crown that will last forever (2 Corinthians 9:25). The writer uses the imagery of an athletic contest in a great amphitheatre with thousands of spectators. They witness the race and cheer the athletes as they press on for the prize. Our witnesses are the great heroes of faith (Hebrews chapter 11). They aren’t spectators. They’re examples for us to follow. They have gone before us and have already won the race. Their stories are inspiring and will encourage us to persevere to the end. They finished well. This wasn’t because of who they were but because they saw ‘Him who is invisible’, (Hebrews 11:27) and kept their eyes on Him. If we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ (Hebrews 3:14 NLT). Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me into the race for the crown that will last forever. Please show me any hidden sin or superfluous things I’m holding on to that hinder me running well. Help me to fix my eyes on Jesus, today and every day. Amen. Evident Changes: Cikgu Normi Mohd Said

This is Normi, a colleague of my friend, Edith Indek.  As of last July, she was desperately looking for products to cure her then-very-bad acne problem. She had been on countless products to fight her problem but couldn't find the right cure.  She saw Edith's copy of our Mary Kay Look Book and read about our Mary Kay System for Acne-Proned Skin and she was VERY interested!!  Without much thought, she placed an order for a whole set (Clarifying Cleanser, Pore-Purifying Serum & Spot Solution) without even knowing personally who she was buying it from!!  Such desperate confidence!!
