Independent research firm Brand Keys just published the official results of its 2011 Customer Loyalty Engagement Index, which examines customers’ relationships with 528 brands across 79 categories. Mary Kay ranked #1 in customer loyalty in two categories: cosmetics and facial moisturizer.

In addition, Mary Kay ranked #6 overall in “Brands That Delight”, a list of the top performers across all categories that are “knocking the ball out of the park when it comes to customer engagement and loyalty,” as referenced by a Feb. 7, 2011, article published by online news service Marketing Daily. The list includes such notable brands as Netflix, Apple, Walgreens and McDonald’s. According to Brand Keys, loyal customers are important to brands because they:

Q: What does SPF stand for and what does it mean?

A: SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. SPF value refers to a product's ability to block the sun's UVB rays. It is measured by the amount of solar energy necessary to cause a noticeable sunburn. This means that when you use products with a high SPF, more solar exposure is required to induce sunburn than when you use a product with a low SPF.

Q: What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?

A: UVA and UVB rays are two types of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. UVA rays penetrate deeply into your skin and cause photodamage and skin aging. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and are a major cause of skin cancers.

Q: Do higher SPF values provide more protection?

A: Interestingly, SPF protection does not actually increase proportionately with a designated SPF number. For example, SPF 4 blocks 75 percent of sunburn damage; however, it may not provide broad-spectrum protection. An SPF 15 screens 93 percent of sunburn damage; and an SPF 30 screens 97 percent of sunburn damage. Most products with an SPF 15 or greater will provide broad-spectrum protection against both UVB and UVA damage, such as our Mary Kay® SPF 30 Sunscreen*. And remember, UVA radiation causes photodamage and skin aging. Higher SPF sunscreens should be used to avoid sunburn; however, they should not be used to prolong sun exposure.

Q: If I apply an SPF 15 product and follow that with another SPF 15 product, will that give me an SPF of 30?

A: No. SPF values are not additive. If you use two SPF 15 products together, you get an SPF of 15. Remember that all sunscreen products should be applied liberally to obtain the labeled SPF value.

Q: Is it true that regular use of sunscreens leads to decreased vitamin D levels causing osteoporosis and even cancer?

A: No. Adequate vitamin D levels are easily maintained with a normal diet and minimal sun exposure.

Q: What can I do to protect my skin from sun-induced damage?

A: The best way to protect your skin is to minimize your sun exposure. Practice sun-safe habits by applying a skin care product daily with an SPF of 15 or higher, wearing clothing with a tight weave, a hat with an extended brim to shade the face and neck, and sunglasses to protect the eyes. All of these steps can help reduce the potential for sun damage.

Q: What is the proper way to apply sunscreen?

A: Always follow the manufacturer's directions. Most recommend applying a generous amount of product to dry skin 15 to 30 minutes before going outside to allow time for it to dry onto your skin. When applying it, pay particular attention to your face, ears, hands and arms, and generously coat the skin that is not covered by clothing. If you're wearing insect repellant or makeup, you should apply sunscreen before those products.

Be generous. You should use about one ounce or a "palmful" of sunscreen to cover your arms, legs, neck and face. For best results, most sunscreens must be reapplied at least every one to three hours and even more often if you are swimming or perspiring. Remember that some sunscreen can rub off when you dry yourself with a towel.

Q: What is the best way to take care of my skin after sun exposure?

18 September, 2011 Today's Free Devotional from Ellel Ministries International  Chasing the New "Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds." John 12:24, NIV Whilst out walking with our son, Kyle, I encouraged him to keep an eye out for conkers. Conkers, for those unfamiliar with them, are the large seeds of a horse chestnut tree that are a favourite with children for hunting out and playing with. It’s still very early in the conker season and so the search was a drawn out process. I scanned the ground we walked on for the prickly green balls that fall from the trees. This casing, when removed, contains the actual hard, deep brown, ball of a seed. As I scoured the terrain for a freshly fallen conker, Kyle kept finding the rotting, dirty and half buried conkers of last year. I continued to encourage Kyle to look for the fresh conkers until at one point Kyle simply asked, “Why?” A good question indeed! Why did we have to find the fresh ones? In fact, once we looked more closely at the older conkers, we saw conkers with roots on, starting a life of a whole new tree. As I continued our walk my mind drifted to this scripture. We can so easily chase the new, the fresh, the next ‘thing’ and completely miss what God has already started because it doesn’t look so clean and fresh. We can get caught up in the excitement of all that’s new and miss the importance of perseverance, pushing through, growing slowly but with a purpose. Yes, it may be hard work, dirty and seemingly slow moving but it’s the way to fruitfulness. It may feel as though nothing is really changing, yet it’s so important that we continue with what God has started, rather than continuously searching for what’s the next “new thing” for us to chase. New life will only come to us through allowing the old to die and new growth to begin and then flourish. This takes time and persistence... two words which aren’t favourable in today’s ‘instant’ society. Let’s consider how much time we spend on chasing the “new” and how much time we spend on persisting with deepening our roots, letting the old die and seeing strong and steady growth in our lives. Prayer: Father God, thank You that I’m a new creation in You. Please give me the strength to persist in allowing the old to die and the growth to take place, so that I can be more fruitful for Your Kingdom. Amen. There are many circles of five—five individuals—men and women, all ages, unified by mindset, focused, concentrated, confident. Their conversation is of prayer for the priority of the day. The Lord speaks directly to those gathered—the same to each one, thus confirming their direction for prayer and action. Postured to pray concerning conflict and need they pray prophetically for each issue. As the Lord directs, there are groups everywhere—circles of five, watching the world scene—declaring: 

“We take our stand on the defining line, out on the horizon where the battle is joined; we speak in behalf of the Kingdom, of the Almighty God. His is an everlasting Kingdom, advanced with our prayers and also our strong stand for His righteous cause. We establish a boundary along our perimeter; we plant truth there, and our commitment there. With the strength of God within and His strength to press against, we apply pressure on the horizon to push back the advance of the violent and ungodly. We mark for exposure those who are tricksters. We face winds coming over the horizon and understand their meaning; we see dark forces and declare their destruction, stopping their advance into our region. All at once – we push against overwhelming and deafening contests, declaring – No! not here; not now, not ever. No! – not ours; not now, not ever.  

Instead, we affirm – Yes! here and now and ours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory! We change the horizon today, and we will again . . . tomorrow.”

As Christians we have the Spirit of God living within, teaching us through our human spirit to understand spiritual things. It is the Spirit within that enables us to discern between what is real and what is not. Without the Spirit revelation is veiled. Without the Spirit covenant relationship is more religious than spiritual.

This supernatural endowment distinguishes those who have the Spirit—we have hope, know truth, recognize God’s leading, and are blessed with spiritual understanding beyond even Jesus’ disciples: “While everyone was marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, “Listen to me and remember what I say. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies.” But they didn’t know what he meant. Its significance was hidden from them, so they couldn’t understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.” Luke 9:43-45, NLT  

The disciples did not have the Spirit until after Jesus ascended to heaven; Jesus told them to wait in Jerusalem for “the promise of the Father.” Applied to our lives revelation of God’s leading ‘by the Spirit’ empowers us to do more from His eternal perspective; making the application we rise above circumstances with insight beyond what is possible naturally. Limitations of this truth result because we do not know it; or knowing, we continue to live as though we do not. Acts 2: 1-4, 16-18
